Petrol prices go up by Rs 7.50 per litre from 24th May

New Delhi: With the Indian rupee breaching the level of 56 against a dollar on Wednesday, oil firms reportedly has raised the prices of petrol on Wednesday by Rs 7.50 per litre in order to overcome the losses.

The new prices of petrol will be made effective from midnight today. 

Earlier, Petroleum Minister S Jaipal Reddy said there is an immediate need to raise fuel prices, but refused to say when the hike will actually take place.

"It (price increase) is very essential but (before hiking rates) we have to talk to political parties,"

Petrol prices were last increased on November 4 last year. As per reports, prices of Diesel will remain the same.

Noida land result: Land notification for three villages canceled

On Friday, Allahabad high court rejected land acquisition in three villages of Gautam Budh Nagar district in UP for the  development of greater Noida and Noida extension.

 The court has  directed UP chief secretary to appoint an officer to investigate the matter  while ordering to curb all new construction plan till the implementation of  masterplan 2021. The Noida Extension area is spread over 4,000 acres and estimated 2.5 lakh houses are being built there. Out of this, about one lakh units have already been sold by builders.

A writ petition was filed against Greater Noida authorities challenging acquisition of land by the authorities. On September 12, the high court had started hearing. Above 400 farmers from over 12 villages had moved to the High Court challenging acquisition of their land.

In their petition, farmers had stated that the government had stated the “urgency clause” in the acquisition which deprive them of their right to raise voice against the acquisition. They further contended that while the land was acquired for industrial development, the government handed it over to the private builders.

In early July, the Supreme Court upheld the Allahabad High Court order quashing the acquisition of over 156 hectares of land from farmers in Greater Noida.
On July 19, the Allahabad High Court had quashed acquisition of nearly 600 hectares of land in two villages in Greater Noida affecting more than 20,000 home buyers.
After these hearings, other villagers in Noida Extension also went to court against land acquisition by the state government.

NC’s told their Tourists to leave Outer Banks before Irene

BUXTON, N.C. (AP) — A Hurricane watch was subjected early Thursday for much of the North Carolina coast.  Tens of thousands of tourists on North Carolina’s were fleeing an exposed strip of coastal villages and beaches off North Carolina.
They are being told to cut short vacations and run off the uncovered strip of coastal villages and beaches as Hurricane Irene approaches.
The storm is expected to come on shore Saturday in North Carolina with winds of around 115 mph (185 kph). Forecasters predict it will then bang up the East Coast, discarding rain from Virginia to New York City before a much-weakened form trudges through New England.
An evacuation order for Dare County went into effect Thursday morning and officials estimated up to 150,000 tourists would be leaving. Authorities concerned about traffic closed schools in Dare and a neighboring county on what was to be the first day of the academic year.
Few of the visitors left that place on Wednesday night to keep away from traffic on the main road that hacks through many communities.
"It's going to be a mess," said 66-year-old Buxton resident Leon Reasor as he stood inside a local bait shop. "Anyone who tells you they're not worried is a liar."

Loans to get costlier as RBI hikes rates

New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday hiked short-term lending and borrowing rates for the eleventh time in the last 17 months.
The repo rate has been hiked by 0.50 per cent to 8 per cent and the reverse repo rate has been hiked by 0.50 per cent to 7 per cent. The CRR remained unchanged at 6 per cent.
The RBI rate hike will make the loans costlier and may add to the pain of the Noida home buyers.
For a Rs 20 lakh loan over 20 year tenure, EMI will rise to Rs 20,304, from Rs 19,632 currently. And for a 30 lakh loan over 20 years, EMI will now hit Rs 30,456 from Rs 29,449.
Pradeep Agarwal, who took a Rs 45 lakh loan to buy a villa in Noida two years ago, pays 23,000 every month as EMI.
"How will we pay if the interest rates go up? Even builders are not sure whether they can refund home buyers. The home buyers are stuck between the agitations of farmers with the authority," Pradeep Agarwal, a home buyer said.
Banks warn the jolt could come as early as next week.
MD and CEO, ING Vysya Bank Shailendra Bhandari said, "I don't think this 50 basis hike is going to be something, which banks are going to retain for themselves. So rates will go up from next week or so."
"We will have to look at this increase closely, it may necessitate a re-look at lending rates," Executive Director, Bank of Baroda RK Bakshi said.
And this doesn't spell the end of the loan spiral. The RBI has indicated there could be more hikes to tame inflation. Economists warn the move will moderate growth - translating into lower salary hikes in 2012, possibly even job loss.

Strong earthquake strikes off Papua New Guinea

SYDNEY:  A  strong earthquake has struck off the coast of the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea. There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami alert was issued.

The US Geological Survey says the magnitude-6.2 quake struck today 46 miles south of the town of Kavieng on the island of New Ireland. The earthquake struck at a depth of 21 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a tsunami alert.

The Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea lies on the "Ring of Fire", an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 per cent of the world's quakes occur.
