Diwali offer: MSRTC to ply 1,250 additional buses to clear rush

To clear extra rush during the festive season and to stop exploitation of passengers by private operators, the Pune division of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has decided to increase the number and frequency of buses plying out of Pune. The MSRTC officials said no one would be turned away from ticket counters and that each and every passengers who wants to head home for Diwali holidays will be provided a ticket.

About 1,250 extra buses would ply from the bus stations in Shivajinagar, Swargate, Pune station, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Engineering College Grounds.

“In total, 1,250 buses will be operational from October 22 to 25 to clear the Diwali rush. As soon as all the seats on a bus get booked, another bus will be pressed in service on the same route without a delay,” said Mukund Dhas, public relations officer, MSRTC.

About two lakh migrants from different regions of the state return to their homes during Diwali. Private transporters take undue advantage and cash in on the festive season by charging higher fares.

“Frequency of buses plying to Nashik, Nagar and Aurangabad will also be increased. Buses will ply every 10 minutes,” said Vilas Patil, depot manager, Shivajinagar bus depot.

The Engineering College ground has also been rented out for four days, from where about 750 buses would ply everyday.

“To tackle the increase in traffic from October 21, the frequency of buses to Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara will be increased. Buses will depart every 15 minutes for Kolhapur and Sangli, and every 10 minutes for Satara from the Swargate stand,” said Vijakumar Diwate, Swargate depot manager.
