
Gagan Narang, who won four gold medals and woman archer Deepika Kumari, who bagged two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games 2010, won best male and female athletes in the Sahara Sports Awards 2010, held at MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex on Saturday night.
Sachin Tendulakar bagged the Sports Icon of the Millennium award and Cricketer of the Year Male award, whereas former national captain Mithali Raj won the Cricketer of the year Female award in the Sahara Sports Awards 2010.
Double trap gold medalist at the Junior World Cup at Suhl, Germany shooter Asher Noria and World Junior (U-20) chess champion Soumya Swaminathan won the Young Achiever award in men's and women's category. Indian Davis Cup team won the Team of the Year award.
Wrestling coach Yashvir Singh won the Coach of the Year award, while Gurbachan Singh Randhawa (athletics) begged the Legends Honour award. Footballer Syed Hamid and hockey player Manohar Topno were honoured with 'Unsung Heroes' of yesteryears at the second Sahara India Sports Awards.
The nominees were short listed by 400 members of Sports Journalist Federation of India (SJFI) from across the nation through secret ballots. The jury led by former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar picked the winners of Sahara Sports Awards 2010.
